Year 10 Work experience Letter

Year 10,

We hope you are excited about your upcoming work experience placement. Spending time in a professional working environment will provide you with a great opportunity to develop transferable skills, establish professional contacts and learn more about the type of career you might like in the future.

This document is intended to provide useful guidance on how your placement will work and

what you need to do to ensure it is a success. If you have any other questions or concerns

during your placement, please do not hesitate to contact the school using the details at the

end of this document.

Dates / Timings:

Your work experience placement should last from Monday 1 July to Friday 5 July 2024. The

exact timings of your placement will vary slightly depending on where you are doing it, but

your hours should be roughly similar in length to the school day.

Attendance / Punctuality:

You are expected to maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality whilst on work

experience. This means attending your placement every day and arriving on time each day.

Please make sure you have planned your journey in advance and leave enough time for

something to go wrong. If you do not arrive on time, the employer will contact the school to

let us know and we will then need to contact your parents / carers to find out where you are

and check you are safe.

If you are not able to attend your placement due to illness, a parent / carer must contact the

employer and school as soon as possible, ideally before 8am.

If there are any problems with punctuality, the employer may have a conversation with students to draw your attention to the issues and explain the importance of good time-keeping in the workplace. If there are repeated issues, the employer will contact the

school so that further action can be taken.

Induction:

Employers have been asked to give you a short induction at the start of the placement. This

should help to make sure that you have all the information you need to be successful during

the placement. The induction might involve the employer providing details of the following:

  • Introductions to key staff
  • Tour of the workplace
  • Location of toilet facilities
  • Start and finish times
  • Arrangements for breaks
  • Behaviour expectations
  • Overview of hazards / risks
  • Details of tasks / activities

If you have any questions  about anything, it is best to politely ask the employer immediately.

Placement Activities: The employer will give you various activities to do during your placement. This might include observing other staff doing their work, completing practical tasks or working on projects. It is important that you listen to instructions carefully and try your best with the work you are given. If you do not understand what you have been asked to do, please let the employer know so that they can help you.

Safety / Wellbeing:

It is important that you feel safe and supported on your work experience placement. If you do feel concerned or unsafe at any time, you should let the employer know and they will try their best to support you in the first instance. If the employer is not able to help you or it is a member of staff in the workplace that is making you feel unsafe, you should contact the

school by calling on 020 88313001 and we will be able to support you.

Behaviour:

You are expected to maintain exemplary standards of behaviour whilst on work experience. This is important as you are not only representing the school, but also the employers who have kindly agreed to host your placement. You are expected to adhere to the usual rules that would apply if you were in school, including the following:

  • Treat others with good manners, politeness, understanding and respect
  • Take full advantage of the opportunities on offer and be willing to contribute positively
  • Respect the premises and resources and maintain a clean and tidy environment
  • Only use IT systems and resources in an appropriate way
  • Wear the correct clothing in line with the dress code of the employer
  • Attend and arrive punctually to the placement on the agreed days
  • Work on the tasks set to the best of your abilities
  • Follow the health and safety regulations set out by the employer
  • Not to carry or consume tobacco products, vapes, drugs or alcohol

In addition to following the school rules, you must also follow any reasonable instructions, rules or expectations set out by the employer. The employer should make these clear to you at the start of the placement. Where behaviour falls below the expected standards, employers may have a conversation with you to draw your attention to the issues and explain what you need to do differently. If there are repeated issues or a serious infringement, the employer will contact the school so that further action can be taken. This may result in sanctions or, in serious cases, you may be withdrawn from the placement and made to return to school.

Placement Checks:

Spark will conduct placement checks throughout the week and employers will update them with any issues. This will be shared with the school.

Employer Evaluation:

Employers will be asked to give some feedback on your performance at the end of the placement. Please bear that in mind and ensure that you are listening carefully to instructions and trying your best on all the tasks that you are set. This will help to ensure that you get positive feedback at the end of the placement.

Contact Information:

You are welcome to contact the school at any point during your placement if you are confused, worried or feel unsafe. The best ways to do this are by calling the school on 020 8831 3001 or contacting Sue Comfort via email:  s.comfort@logicstudioschool.org

Good luck with your work placement!
